Baby Wesley: Baby's First Year Photo Sessions

I promised that I have plenty of blogging to catch up on from the past several (or six) months. My business has grown as has my family, so most days there just aren't enough hours to get everything done. Not long after my daughter was born last year, Mike and Evelyn contacted me to set up a newborn session for their baby boy on the way. Baby Wesley was born in June, and what a little charmer he was! I really enjoyed spending time with Wes and his parents and told them about the shiny brand new Baby's First Year packages I was beginning to offer. As my daughter was only a month old, I had a constant reminder of how quickly babies change in their first year of life. I thought First Year packages would be a great way for parents to collect portraits of their babies beyond the newborn days and before their first birthdays because so many changes happen between those two milestones. So baby Wesley became my first Baby's First Year subject and model. We are coming up soon on his nine month session, and it's been so fun to watch him grow over the past several photo sessions. He's the master of awesome facial expressions and he leaves me smiling from ear to ear both while photographing him and polishing off his photos. I'm already getting a little sad thinking about him turning one year old. Maybe he deserves a little baby graduation cap and gown when he completes all of his First Year sessions? ;)

I can definitely relate to how quickly second children grow up. When they contacted me, M family's baby girl was already four months old and they wanted to have portraits done before time slipped away even more quickly. Big sister was so sweet and loving with her little sister. I love their sister cuddle time photos!

Well, hello! My sincerest apologies for not sharing photos in many months. I promise, it's all for good reason. I have been so, so busy photographing babies and families. So without further ado, it's time to finally share some of my work from the past several months.

This is adorable baby William and his sweet parents, Cherisse and Michael. William was born back in November. I was so impressed with his parents and their sense of calm with their first baby. I left their house with such a serene feeling (that didn't last long when I returned to my own munchkins). Kudos to creating a calm and loving environment for sweet baby boy. :)

It's such an amazing time in a couple's lives as they welcome a child for the first time. Being able to capture such a time feels like an honor. I know how treasured these photos will become as baby grows up all too quickly.

I was so excited to photograph Leighton and her parents for a second time. Our first shoot was last summer, and I had so much fun with this little sweetheart. Leighton has a killer smile and is such a hoot. She had just learned "ta-da!" and loved showing it off. I loved all of the cuddles and kisses she gave her mommy and daddy - such a fun family!

What great energy this family has! I loved watching two big brothers taking care of their little sister. Sweet, sweet, sweet!

If you have kids, you may recognize Staci from her many musical performances for children around town. I loved when she broke out in song during this photoshoot and her family just melted into happiness. Such an awesome mamma!

I'll remember my photo shoot with Vielca, Joe, CiCi, and Ana Camila for a long time. Baby Ana Camila did something that surprised all of us: she stood up on her own for the very first time! She is definitely an intrepid explorer because she took this feat on the steep hill outside the Zilker Hillside Theater. Very impressive! I was so happy to be able to document this moment for her family to cherish.

Sarah, Tim, Isaac, and Claire are new to Austin from Oregon. Surprisingly on the morning of our photos, we woke up to a very dense fog, not unlike what I would imagine to see on the Oregon coast. It was certainly not a typical Austin morning, but maybe that's the universe's way of providing the perfect setting for their photos? I love the softness reflected in the photos. This gang loves to hike, explore, and be outside, so it was a great morning for it!

My Favorite Image of 2013

I like to enter my work in competitions from time to time as it challenges me to continue to learn and grow. Rock the Shot Forum is hosting a contest this month for photographers' favorite images of 2013. There are many gorgeous entries and I've decided to enter one of my own. As I reflected on my work over the past year, the image that stood out in my mind surprised me because it is not a portrait I had planned. It was a very impromptu grab of my camera due to powerful emotions in the moment.

My two-year-old son was about to leave us to walk behind hospital double doors and undergo surgery. This was a moment I had worried about and feared for months as I wondered how to best prepare him for what I thought could be a traumatic event. He shattered every notion when he bravely took the nurse's hand and walked down the hallway with her. He turned back to tell us goodbye, and this moment forever redefined my definition of courage.

A Child's Garden of Language

I recently had the privilege of photographing parents and their young children enrolled in Mandarin immersion classes at A Child's Garden of Language. A Child's Garden of Language offers language immersion classes for children up to age 5. The former teacher and mother in me adored watching these children and parents learn together.

Jill and Alvin's Wedding

Jill and Alvin had me from the moment I arrived and saw the amount of love that went into their wedding preparations. My absolute favorite part of their decorations was the garland made of photographs of "perfect pairs". You'll see from the photos that they had a lot of fun preparing these creative photos. I was also amazed to hear that Jill made her own dress (!). The wedding was held at the beautiful historical home of friends, who also provided homebrew beer. The couple wanted to include friends and family in the festivities as much as possible. Guests read poetry, sang songs, and one even quoted Mob Wives (a real show, apparently). I loved witnessing the various ways friends and families expressed their love to the couple.

I'm excited to be a part of a silent auction coming up for the local nonprofit Little Helping Hands. I first heard about LHH while seeking volunteer opportunities for my young son. I get excited each month when the calendar is mailed out; there's really something for everyone. It's an organization I'm very proud to support.

Leighton

When Leighton's parents asked me to focus on photographing her being herself, I was stoked. I love portraits of kids being kids. I love the expressions on their faces as they are swept up by activities they enjoy.

Leighton loves being outside, blowing bubbles, and swinging. She also loves birds and I was quite impressed that she is already starting to identify them. She does think that lots of birds are grackles, but can't we also say the same of many adults? :)

I love the spirit in this little girl. Taking her portraits made me think of one of my favorite quotes:

Little Luke is four months old and growing up quickly like all infants do, so his parents wanted to have some family photos taken to remember this time in their lives. We met by Austin's iconic PennyBacker Bridge on a nice quiet morning. Luke's first tooth had just come in the night before, and it was remarkable to me how sweet and happy he was considering the lack of sleep and pain he surely experienced. That definitely says a lot about his personality!

Mark is a pilot, so I think the photos of Luke "flying" are extra cute. The love this family has for each other is evident in their smiles...such a sweet little family.

Megan and Jon in DC

On a recent visit to Washington, D.C. was able to meet up with Megan and Jon to take their engagement photos. We had a great time jaunting around D.C. and Georgetown. Most of the places we went were new to me, and Megan and Jon did a really good job choosing them. I love the vibrant and verdant backgrounds in their photos.

While we were taking photos near some beautiful hydrangeas outside a home in Megan and Jon's neighborhood, the homeowner happened to return home from a walk with his dog. He was thrilled to see a happy young couple using his garden as a photo background and insisted on cutting a gorgeous bouquet of fresh flowers for Megan.

Vicki and Larsson are expecting their first child in a few months. They live in Seattle, but met and fell in love in Austin. Vicki recently returned to Austin for a short visit and asked me take some photographs of her as a surprise for Larsson. We met at Bull Creek, one of Vicki's (and my) favorite Austin spots. Photographing such a radiant mommy-to-be in such a gorgeous location put my heart in a happy place.
